Who is the most important person in an AA meeting? ›

The chair usually opens the meeting with the A.A. Preamble and a few remarks. Some call for a moment of silence and/or recite the Serenity Prayer. The chair will often ask if there are any people new to A.A. attending the meeting who would like to introduce themselves.

At discussion meetings, one member shares their experience, strength and hope briefly before opening the meeting for others to share. At speaker meetings, one or two people share their story in greater detail, for a longer period of time. The meeting may or may not then be opened for others to share.

AA teaches individuals how to maintain lasting sobriety throughout our lives as well as how to help others. It shows us how to engage in our personal growth journey, which is continuous.

Pink Cloud Syndrome is a phrase that developed within the recovery community to describe someone who is new to recovery (often just out of withdrawal) and riding a wave of bliss. The person feels such confidence and excitement about their recovery that it borders on unrealistic.

Sometimes referred to as "the AA acceptance prayer," the Serenity Prayer is usually recited at the beginning of almost all 12-step group meetings. It is also often recited again at the end of the meeting.

Although no one will ever pressure you to speak, it is good to introduce yourself to the group. You may simply say, “Hi, I am ___ and I am an alcoholic.” If you are uncomfortable admitting to your alcoholism you may simply give your name. Note that only your first name is required due to the anonymity of AA.

The phrase “one day at a time” is usually used as part of the 12 Step Program in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and other recovery groups. AA encourages their participants to only think about staying sober for the next 24 hours. If they can do that every day, it'll get easier as they go along.

A vision for the future. This may be the most important lesson in The Big Book of AA. It is important for everybody in this position to realize that their life is not over. They are able to turn things around with the right approach.

The chairperson is important because all meetings, even if they're small or informal, need some direction and organisation. Without a chairperson, meetings can run late, lead off topic and prevent people from having their say.

Therefore, a leader in A.A. service is a man (or woman) who can personally put principles, plans, and policies into such dedicated and effective action that the rest of us want to back him up and help him with his job.

The traditions have AA steering clear of hierarchies, dogma, public controversies, while other outside entanglements or acquisition of property are to be avoided. To stay independent and self-supporting, the traditions would have AA groups accepting outside contributions from no one.
